In recent years, efforts have been made to establish  gender equality in the world of professional dance.  There is a disconnect, however, between apparent shifts toward equality on the stage--in the public eye--the continuing corruption occurring behind the scenes.  Important steps have been made, and widely publicized, to remove gender as a barrier to performance opportunities.  Although these steps are genuine achievements, they do little to ameliorate the deep roots of patriarchal dominance and gender inequality that still exist in artistic staff and company life.
